The gate's thick red pillars and crossbeams fill the centre, plastered with dozens of small pale notices that catch what little light there is under a heavy grey sky. Fine diagonal rain falls across the whole scene, darkening the tiled roofs on either side and pooling on the cobbled street. A single cyclist in yellow rides along the wet street beside a tall wooden utility pole strung with wires. The muted red of the gate sits against rain-soaked greys, with the cyclist's yellow as a small bright accent. The mood is damp and workaday, a landmark seen on an ordinary wet afternoon. The original is a woodblock print; this is a reproduction of it.

Hasui Kawase (1883–1957) was the leading landscape artist of shin hanga, the early 20th-century revival of Japanese woodblock printing, and was later named a Living National Treasure of Japan.

Is this an original artwork?
No. This is a modern fine art reproduction printed on 200 gsm matte fine art paper, not an original or hand-painted work.

What size should I choose?
30x40 cm suits a shelf, a desk or a gallery wall of several small pieces. 50x70 cm is the usual choice for a single print above a bed, a sofa or a console table. 60x90 cm works as a standalone focal point on a large empty wall.

Does the print come framed?
Only if you choose a frame or canvas in the options, where they ship to your country; both arrive ready to hang. An unframed print ships without a frame, and every size matches a standard frame format, so it fits off-the-shelf frames.

How is my order printed?
Each print is made to order at the partner facility closest to you, which keeps delivery times short and shipping distances low. The product page shows where your print is made: locally in your country, or in the closest country with a partner facility.

Can I return it?
Yes. You can return a print within 14 days of delivery. A damaged or defective print is replaced free of charge if you tell us within 30 days of receiving it. Returns go to our address in Poland, and the return shipping is at your cost; a damaged or defective print does not need to be sent back.
